During the design phase of automated production lines with high safety requirements, such as lithium battery manufacturing, automotive welding lines, semiconductor equipment and rail transit systems, equipment engineers attach great importance to the fire resistance of moving cables. They frequently specify high-flexibility drag chain cables with UL flame retardant ratings to mitigate fire risks caused by short circuits or overheating of wire harnesses. However, for the complete moving pipeline system, designers often overlook the fire performance of plastic drag chains, the external carriers protecting cables. Even when internal cables meet flame retardant standards, conventional plastic drag chains with a larger volumetric proportion still adopt combustible substrates rated UL94 HB. This creates a hidden fire weak point within the pipeline system.
Most standard nylon drag chains are classified UL94 HB, which is combustible. In the event of damaged cable insulation leading to short circuits, splashing welding spatter or local overheating on production lines, the external drag chain can be ignited even if the cable itself is flame-retardant. Flames can rapidly propagate along the long reciprocating routing of the drag chain. Molten drips from burning drag chains may ignite adjacent cables, panels and components, accelerating fire spread. This may result in equipment burnout, production line shutdown, threats to personnel safety, heavy direct economic losses and compliance failure of project acceptance.
It is worth noting that drag chains occupy a larger volume than internal cables in the complete pipeline assembly. Once ignited, they continuously release heat and bake the flame-retardant cables housed inside. Even if the cable is self-extinguishing under standard testing, sustained external high-temperature exposure will damage the cable sheath and eventually disable the entire cable system. Therefore, fire protection for moving pipelines in automation cannot focus solely on cables. Matching flame-retardant drag chains are essential to build a complete and reliable fire barrier for pipelines. In high-risk industrial equipment, UL94 V0 flame-retardant drag chains are not an optional upgrade, but a mandatory requirement to ensure equipment safety and fire code compliance.
To address this widespread industry pain point, CSB has launched the brand-new DURAMOV® FR series UL94 V0 flame-retardant cable drag chains, covering six models: C01FR, C21FR, C31FR, C02FR, C03FR and C06FR. The series adopts engineering plastic substrates modified with inherent halogen-free flame retardants instead of surface coating treatment. The entire chain link achieves stable UL94 V0 flame retardancy and complies with vertical burning test requirements. When exposed to open flame, the material self-extinguishes quickly without flaming molten drips that could trigger secondary fire spread. Meanwhile, DURAMOV® FR fully inherits the mechanical structure, dimensional parameters and operational performance of CSB standard drag chains. It combines flame retardant safety with high strength, fatigue resistance and low-noise high-speed operation required for dynamic industrial applications.

Flame Retardancy: Inherent halogen-free flame-retardant modification of base material. Full chain link rated UL94 V0. Unlike surface coating solutions, flame retardancy does not degrade after long-term reciprocating friction and wear. The material self-extinguishes upon removal of flame and prevents secondary ignition by molten drips.
Temperature Resistance: Continuous operating temperature from -40℃ to +120℃. Stable flame retardant performance under alternating high and low temperature conditions common in industrial workshops.
Operational Performance: Retains low friction and low noise properties. Tolerates high acceleration, long overhead and sliding applications to protect high-flexibility cables and hoses during reciprocating motion. Mechanical properties remain stable after millions of reciprocating fatigue cycles.
Material Properties: Low emission and low dust generation to meet cleanroom control requirements. Resistant to oil, cutting fluids and weak chemicals for use in oily factory environments.
DURAMOV® FR flame-retardant drag chains are designed for industries requiring strict fire safety standards: lithium battery production equipment, automotive welding robots, moving cable systems for rail transit, SMT and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, coating and chemical automation lines, heavy-duty machine tools, warehouse automation equipment, robotic moving cable modules and enclosed automated conveying lines. In these applications, pairing flame-retardant cables with FR drag chains creates a complete closed-loop fire protection system for pipelines.

Selection Note: All FR flame-retardant drag chains adopt inherent substrate flame-retardant modification, rather than surface coating. Flame retardancy will not fail due to chain link abrasion or long-term service. Direct replacement is possible with standard drag chains of the same specification. Mounting dimensions are fully compatible for new machine design and retrofitting of existing equipment.
Conventional plastic drag chains carry UL94 HB combustible rating. Even when all internal cables are flame-retardant, the drag chain substrate can be ignited easily under short-circuit overheating or welding spatter. Flames spread rapidly along the drag chain routing, and combustion heat continuously damages the sheath of internal flame-retardant cables. This eventually causes total failure of the moving pipeline and amplifies accident losses.
DURAMOV®‑FR series UL94 V0 flame-retardant cable drag chains eliminate the fire safety weakness of the external pipeline carrier. In case of local overheating or spark splash, the drag chain self-extinguishes quickly to stop flame propagation along the pipeline, protect internal high-flexibility cables and reduce fire escalation risks. It safeguards production assets and personnel while helping machine builders meet industry fire and safety certification requirements.
Many automation equipment designers fall into a common misconception: “The pipeline is safe as long as the cables are flame-retardant.” However, the drag chain, as the large-volume external component enclosing cables, is the most frequently overlooked fire weak point in the whole system. With DURAMOV® FR flame-retardant drag chains, CSB integrates flame safety into the drag chain itself. Together with flame-retardant high-flexibility cables, they form a dual safety guarantee for moving pipelines in automated production lines and help OEMs build automation equipment with higher safety levels.
